Frequently Asked Questions

What is edge computing?

Edge computing processes data close to where it is produced, on devices, gateways or small local data centers, instead of sending everything to a central cloud. It cuts latency and bandwidth use and keeps working when connectivity is poor.

What is the difference between edge and fog computing?

The terms overlap. Fog computing usually describes a layer between devices and the cloud, with many nodes sharing the work, while edge computing refers more broadly to computing at or near the data source.

Why does edge computing need its own platforms?

Edge sites are numerous, remote and resource-limited, so they need lightweight runtimes, central fleet management, and tools that cope with intermittent connectivity.

Where should I start?

Start with Edge Computing Platforms for an overview, then Edge Kubernetes Platforms and Edge Management and Orchestration for running and managing workloads, and Edge AI for inference.

Why are some pages not listed?

Databases for Edge Computing, CDN Platforms with Serverless Support and Public Cloud IoT Platform Services were merged into other pages, so they are not listed separately.
